The Marshall Opera Oral History Project's mission is to collect, preserve, and disseminate the stories of seasoned and distinguished living composers as well as introduce these composers to a new generation of performers. For this program, ten young artists interviewed ten participating composers, and the young artists will perform a selection from one of the composer's operas.

Premiered in 2022 at Opera Southwest, Zorro is based on the adventures of Johnston McCully’s legendary pulp hero, the dashing masked vigilante who defends the commoners and indigenous peoples of California against tyrannical officials.

Kelly will participate in a concert celebrating the acquisition of Marga Richter’s music into the New York Public Library’s musical collection. Repertoire includes works by Marga Richter and two song cycle commissions by composers Frances Pollock and Sarah Gibson with texts by Sandra Cisneros and Mary Oliver. Kelly will premiere these works with her dear friend, Michael Skelly.

The American Opera Project and New York Academy of Medicine will present scenes from “Semmelweis.” The showcase takes place on Dec. 5, 2023 at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City.
The work, which focuses on the life of Ignaz Semmelweis, whose research saved millions of mothers’ lives, is composed by Raymond Lustig and written by librettist Matthew Doherty. The work was developed as part of the AOP’s Composers & the Voice training program and premiered in Budapest on Sept. 28, 2018.
“Semmelweis” will feature music music director Mila Henry, stage director Matt Gray, and Matthew Bryan Feld as Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, as well as sopranos Charlotte Mundy, Marcy Richardson, and Joy Tamayo; mezzos Kelly Guerra, Samantha Martin, and Sophie Delphis; and altos Megan Schubert and Guadalupe Peraza. There will be an instrumental ensemble of three musicians: pianist Nissa Kahle, accordion and keyboards Peter Flint, and violist Leah Asher.
Before the presentation, Lustig and Doherty will discuss the development of their work and the lasting impact of Dr. Semmelweis.

While Christmas is an important holiday for many Americans, it is just one thread in a colorful tapestry of holidays celebrated in the United States today. This December, join us for the inaugural edition of "Let's Celebrate! Living Holiday Traditions in America,” a new series created to complement traditional holiday programming. We begin our celebration with four 20-minute operas exploring the traditions and stories of the Day of the Dead, Eid al-Adha, Havdalah, and the Spring Festival.
